The final part looks at later changes to the New Town and the pioneering residents whose families, schools, workplaces and organisations created its community life.
The Basildon Development Corporation was dissolved in 1986, with its responsibilities passing to the Commission for the New Towns. In 1994, following a tenant ballot, much of the social housing stock was transferred to new management, and numerous right-to-buy purchases further diversified local ownership.
The families who moved into Basildon during the early years of the New Town became an important part of its history. Many had previously lived in crowded parts of London and were attracted by the prospect of a new home with more space, gardens and a healthier environment. However, life in the early New Town could also be challenging. Families sometimes moved into neighbourhoods while roads, shops, schools and other facilities were still being constructed. Residents therefore experienced the unusual situation of watching their town grow around them. These early inhabitants became known as the pioneers of Basildon and played an important role in establishing the community. Through schools, workplaces, clubs, churches, sports and local organisations, these new residents helped create the social identity of the town and turned the planned development into a living community.
