Cherrydown's importance to Basildon lies mainly in transport and access to the town centre rather than in a long traditional shopping parade.
Cherrydown formed part of the developing road system south of Basildon's new town centre. A major early landmark was the Eastern National bus garage, formally opened at Cherrydown in April 1961. The garage replaced an earlier operating base at Bull Road in Vange and became an important part of Basildon's expanding bus network.
The opening of Basildon railway station on 25 November 1974 transformed this area. Construction included Station Way, linking Cherrydown with Southernhay, together with new road and pedestrian infrastructure. Cherrydown was subsequently distinguished as Cherrydown East and Cherrydown West.
The station scheme included a new railway bridge and pedestrian subway beneath Southernhay, while another subway beneath Cherrydown East connected towards the Kingswood housing area. That Cherrydown East subway was later filled in during 2017.
Unlike Town Square, East Walk or Southernhay, Cherrydown was not principally laid out as a major New Town shopping parade. Its historical importance is therefore better understood through transport facilities, roadside and commercial premises and later housing. A claim to list “every shop” here would create a false impression of the area's original function.
Parts of Cherrydown East later underwent substantial redevelopment. Planning records for addresses including 265, 495, 553 and 681 Cherrydown East record permission associated with demolition of existing buildings and a large residential scheme, with later building-control records relating to new blocks of flats.
Cherrydown East remains closely tied to access around Basildon station and the southern side of the town centre. Current town-centre transport improvements include changing Cherrydown East from one-way to two-way traffic and upgrading pedestrian and cycle connections as part of the wider station and bus-interchange scheme.
Cherrydown is most interesting when viewed as part of Basildon's transport history. A walk between Cherrydown, Station Way, the railway station and Southernhay shows how the New Town's road and public-transport network evolved from the early bus era through the arrival of Basildon's own railway station and into the present regeneration programme.
