Laindon Historical Photo Gallery
A selection of photographs already used across the Laindon section, brought together to show the High Road and Shopping Centre as they changed over time.

Laindon High Road: a view connected with the old commercial street that served Laindon before the planned shopping centre.

High Road shops: evidence of the small independent businesses that once lined the road.

Old Laindon: the road layout and building scale were very different from the later New Town redevelopment.

Laindon Shopping Centre: the purpose-built centre that began opening at the end of the 1960s.

Shopping Centre businesses: the units housed supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, food outlets and specialist traders over nearly fifty years.

Changing centre: photographs are especially important because the original shopping-centre buildings were demolished in 2019.
Why Old Photographs Matter
Much of old Laindon has changed beyond recognition. Historic photographs make it possible to compare the earlier High Road, shopfronts, roads and public buildings with the modern district and help identify businesses that otherwise survive only in memories and written records.
What to Look For
- Changes in the width and alignment of the High Road.
- Small independent shopfronts and residential accommodation mixed together.
- The difference between traditional High Road development and the planned 1960s shopping centre.
- Signs, shop names and architectural details that help date a photograph.
- Buildings that have since been demolished or substantially altered.
