Barney's of Cambridge, run by Barney Masman, opened in March 1960 as a fashion business. Quirk Deakin and later estate-agent use followed.
Gina Murray opened as a ladies' hairstylist in March 1960. Barron The Friendly Salon followed, with Carpet Flair later using the premises.
The Sombrero was recorded by 1961 and the unit later became the Lotus Chinese Restaurant.
J.W. Hawkes traded as a fruiterer and greengrocer. Basildon Sports and later Essex Sports then sold sports clothing and equipment.
French and Moon chemists and David Sames chemist/perfumery were followed by Basildon Staff Bureau, optician J.L. Dowdeswell and Abbotts estate agents. KFC later used the unit after it was combined with No. 61.
Howard's Dairies opened here in January 1960 selling dairy produce. Kibby's supermarket followed around 1970, and KFC arrived in 1971; Nos. 59 and 61 were eventually merged for the restaurant/takeaway.
Dents operated as a newsagent and Basildon Recorder sub-office. Later came The Boys From Rathbone Street and the Cartoon Shop, selling cards, comics, masks, collectables and memorabilia.
The Cellar/Galleon Wine was an off-licence from 1960. Tandy later sold hi-fi and electronic equipment from the unit.
Bird's ironmongers and DIY centre opened in 1959. It was followed by Suzi's Hats & Wigs and High Fashions.
Bird's also occupied No. 69. High Fashions followed, and the premises later housed double-glazing businesses Weatherseal Holdings and Supreme O Glaze.
Ffordes Photographic opened in May 1960. Marc Jason Photography followed, and a shoe shop is also recorded among later uses.
Handicraft sold wool and haberdashery. Later occupants included Kinkaid Discount Jewellery, China World arts/crafts and Fishy Friends Aquatics, which closed here in 2011.
Rudgewick and then Kingstons operated as butchers. Later occupants included Intatravel, Phelps & Partners estate agents and Dial Basildon disability charity shop, which closed in 2017.
Elton Cleaners opened in 1960. Woolwich Building Society later occupied the unit before moving to No. 46.
Welwoods furniture manufacturers opened in October 1960. Later businesses included Baby Fayre, Playbox 2000, Motorist Discount Centre, Quid Saver and Bath & Shower Warehouse.
Jeweller K.A. Nichol was followed by Ray Hyland's Aquatic and Pet Shop. The pet shop remained a long-running presence before closing in March 2011.
The Basildon Recorder moved here from No. 10 in 1961. Recorder Office Equipment Co., the Aquatic & Pet Shop and Westminster Youth Trust were among later occupants.
L & B Scooters sold Lambretta and Vespa scooters. Sun Luck Chinese restaurant followed, and the address later became Rochfords Diner.
